Measures you can take to protect
yourself from the sun:
The SUN Smart campaign- the skin cancer prevention recommends five key rules to save your skin:
" Stay in the shade between 11 and 3 pm. The suns rays are at the strongest between these hours. The highest risk months in the UK are May to September, but if UVA ageing is a concern, you should go for year round protection. Obviously, seeking the shade is a smart form of protection but UV rays can still reflect back from snow, sand, cement and water, so if being outdoors during these times is necessary, so is protection.
" Make sure that you never burn. Skin burning is our body's chemical response to over-exposure to UV rays. Experts believe that sunburn during childhood can significantly increase your risk of melanoma. Some say your chances of developing this type of skin cancer are doubled by just one blistering sunburn before the age of 20.
" Always cover up. When there's no shade around, the best way to protect your skin from the sun is with loose clothing, a wide- brimmed hat and good quality sunglasses. A wide-brimmed hat can reduce the UV radiation reaching your face and eyes by over 50 percent. When choosing sunglasses look for one of the following the 'CE Mark' and Britsh standard (BS EN 1836: 1997 and a UV 400 label)
" Remember to take extra care with children. Young skin is delicate and very easily damaged by the sun. All children, no matter whether they tan easily or not, should be protected from the sun.
Then use factor 15+ sunscreen. The SPF of a sunscreen is a measure of its ability to filter out UVB rays. You will get over 90 percent protection from UVB rays with SPF 15 when used correctly. Remember that no sunscreen- no matter how high the factor- can offer 100 percent protection. Look for labeling such as full spectrum, broad spectrum and broad band- that offers both UVB (SPF) and UVA defense. When swimming outdoors opt for a water resistant formula, which is less likely to wash away or be sweated off.
The Skin Protection Factor (SPF) is higher in darker skins making it less susceptible to sunburn but it does not mean it is immune to melanoma. Melanoma can strike dark-skinned people and is more deadly because it is likely to be diagnosed later. If you think that slapping on extra-SPF will protect you, your're wrong! All sunscreens are given SPF numbers before getting sunburn. So watch out!
SUNSCREEN DOS & DON'TS
DO apply the product at least 15-30 minutes before sun exposure and then again just as you step outside.
DO stroke the product over clean, dry skin rather than rubbing it in, which reduces protection.
DO re-apply every two hours or more frequently if washed, rubbed or sweated off.
DON'T be stingy with the sunscreen. Use a generous amount- studies show we use only half to one third of the amount of sunscreen needed to get the SPF on the label.
DON'T use it to spend longer in the sun- this will put you at risk of sun damage that could lead to skin cancer.
DON'T store sunscreens in very hot places as extreme heat can ruin their protective chemicals.
DON'T forget to check the use by date- most sunscreens have a shelf life of two or three years.
